Tombstone, June 25, 2009. Photo by Madelyn Roehrig.
In 2009 Madelyn Roehrig started filming people at Andy Warhol’s gravesite. So far, more than 200 individuals have been videotaped. They are passionate, contentious, funny, or sincere, with a blend of whimsy and wisdom.
Entrance music provided by Meeting of Important People with Josh Verbanets and Matt Miller. Intermission music provided by Uke & Tuba. Dave Olson will play the bagpipes during the ending montage.
“Andy once said, “I always thought I’d like my own tombstone to be blank. No epitaph and no name. Well, actually, I’d like it to say “figment.” He never got his wish. But in my project Figments, Andy becomes a real figment of many people’s imaginations, as they talk with the artist about their feelings, hopes, desires and whimsies. Many of the conversations and behavior at Andy’s grave echo the Pop artist’s own often sounding innocent, simplistic statements, many of which, with time, actually turned out to be prophetic and wise.” – Madelyn Roehrig.
Figments: Conversation with Andy, Madelyn Roehrig’s ongoing project, is now in its third year. You can keep up with daily postings from Andy’s grave on Facebook or, if you would like to participate in the project, send an email to andyafterlife@gmail.com.
